How To Make A Beautiful Door Curtain From Old Vertical Blinds

When it comes to replacing old and tired-looking vertical blinds, you might be tempted to just throw them out.  Wait!  Why not convert your old vertical blinds into a functional and attractive door curtain?

Here's how to transform your clutter into pretty chic in a few easy steps.

What you'll need

  • old vertical blinds
  • scissors
  • washing-up liquid
  • warm water
  • sponge
  • beads, crystals etc
  • coloured twine
  • hole punch
  • hanging hooks

You can find everything you'll need to embellish your hanging door curtain in good craft supplies shops.  Crystals, beads, spangles and metallic paints work really well, as they catch the light beautifully when moved by the wind.

How to do it

  1. First of all, remove all the slats from the blind rail and discard it.  The easiest way to do this is by cutting the plastic clips that hold the slats onto the rail, using a sharp pair of scissors.
  2. Now you'll need to clean both sides of each slat.  Make up a mild solution of warm water and washing-up liquid, and sponge down the slats to get rid of any dust and grime.  Use a fresh sponge and clean water to wipe away any residual soap.
  3. Allow the slats to air-dry.
  4. Now you can decorate the slats.  Here's your chance to let your creativity go wild!  You could paint the slats, stencil them, or simply stick a random pattern of pretty beads and crystals over them.  Remember that the slats will be hanging down in the doorway so apply your chosen décor to both sides, allowing the decoration to sparkle in the light as the slats move in the breeze through the open door.
  5. Now make a hole in the top of each slat, using a hole-punch.  Thread a doubled length of your chosen twine through the holes.  The string needs to be long enough to stretch across the width of the door.
  6. Screw hanging hooks directly into the wall above the door, leaving a few centimetres between each one.
  7. Set your new hanging curtain into the hooks over the door, spreading out the slats so that they hang evenly across the opening.

In conclusion

You can transform your tatty old vertical blinds into a stunning, sparkling door curtain by following the steps outlined above.  The slats are wider and therefore more effective at keeping flies out of your home during the summer than traditional chain or plastic streamer door curtains, and they look much more attractive too!
